Your Burning 49ers Quarterback Questions, Answered

Lukas Fitzgerald, Journalist

The 2021-2022 NFL season has just started. The 49ers are in 3rd place in the NFC West division. There are two quarterbacks, which is both a blessing and a curse. It’s good because if one QB gets hurt or needs a rest, the other can come in. It’s terrible because the receivers have to get used to both quarterbacks’ throwing and playing styles. So without further ado, who deserves to be the starting quarterback for the 49ers?

Let’s start with the veteran Jimmy Garoppolo. He has been a member of the 49ers since 2017, which is almost five years. From what I have researched and seen, he has an excellent arm but hesitates and can’t run the ball that well. He has 7,181 passing yards for the Niners, while he has a total of 8,967 passing yards in his career. When the 49ers were playing the Packers, Garoppolo threw 257 yards in one game, more than he threw in the 2014-2015 season. The link to the highlight reel is in the bibliography if you want to check it out.

We also must not forget that in the 2019-2020 season. Jimmy G. carried us to the Super Bowl and had almost 4,000 passing yards that season. To aid my previous statement that he doesn’t run, in the 2019 season, he only rushed 62 yards. I do not know why he runs so little. He has a 40 yd dash time of 4.97 seconds. If you do the math, that is about 8 ft per second and at a constant speed!

Next is an athlete playing his first year with the 49ers, Trey Lance. Since this is his first year in the NFL and he doesn’t have many stats yet, I will be covering him with stats from his college, North Dakota State. He is an expert at getting rid of the ball very quickly and evading the defensive line. He’s surprisingly quick, considering he is 6’4 and 226 pounds. Also, he’s not afraid to rush, and he gains multiple first downs doing so.

In his 2019 college season, he had 2,786 passing yards with 28 TD’s and zero interceptions. In that same season, he had 1,110 rushing yards with 14 TD’s. He also had a 65.2 completion percentage, which for college, is the second-highest of all time!

Having to pick was a tough decision because both of these athletes are experts in their area. But the decision had to be made.

In conclusion, I confidently believe Jimmy Garoppolo should stay as the starting QB, and Lance can have a brighter future and more playing time with another NFL team. I know some of you might disagree, but this is my opinion. And you can think differently. I respect your opinion.
