Have you ever wondered how one of your favorite foods was created!? Well reading this article will help you find out. Pizza has a long history. Flatbreads with toppings were consumed by the ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks. (The latter ate a version with herbs and oil, similar to today’s flatbread) But the modern birthplace of pizza is southwestern Italy’s Campania region, the city of Naples. The Neapolitans required cheap food that could be consumed quickly. Pizza/flatbreads with various toppings, eaten for any meal and sold by street vendors or informal restaurants were perfect for this . “Judgmental Italian authors often called their eating habits ‘disgusting,’” Helstosky notes. These early pizzas eaten by them included ingredients such as tomatoes, cheese, oil, anchovies and garlic. The word pizza was first documented in A.D. 997 in Gaete and successively in different parts of Central and Southern Italy. Pizza was mainly eaten in Italy and by emigrants from there. This changed after World War II when Allied troops stationed in Italy came to enjoy pizza along with other Italian foods. Italian immigrants brought pizza with them to Spain, France, England, and the United States. Pizza was also popular after World War II,  when returning soldiers looked for the food they had grown to love while fighting overseas. If you wanted to know where a type of pizza was named then read this. Legend has it that Italian King Umberto I and Queen Margherita visited Naples in 1889. There, Esposito was asked to make them a pizza. He topped the pizza with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil. That pizza is still known as Pizza Margherita today.
