When you’re outside especially during the spring you may find yourself sneezing, having a runny nose, and more. This is due to pollen allergies although you may wonder what is pollen allergies?

Many people may know pollen allergies as “hay fever” however, experts usually refer to it as “seasonal allergic rhinitis”. This is since each spring, summer, and fall, plants release tiny pollen grains to fertilize other plants of the same species. This results in allergic reactions since most of the pollen that causes this comes from trees, weeds, and grass. Due to this, pollen allergies cause symptoms such as sneezing, itchiness running nose, and watery eyes that are red and itchy, and your mouth and throat would also be itchy and cause you to cough. Not only can pollen allergies cause those symptoms, but it can also have congestion of the nose which is when your nose becomes stuffy up and inflamed, blocked sinuses which is a connected system of hollow cavities in a skull, and cause you to be extremely tired.

Therefore, since pollen allergies cause many symptoms, there are medical treatments, home remedies, and changes in some lifestyle habits that can help ease symptoms that are caused by pollen allergies. The treatments include over-the-counter antihistamine medication such as cetirizine (Zyrtec) or loratadine (Clarine).  A person should start taking these medications a few weeks before the allergy season begins. Other treatments are immunotherapy tablets or shots to desensitize the body to pollen, nasal sprays which are designed to relieve the itching and congestion which includes decongestants that are only a short-term solution for swelling, and nasal corticosteroid spray which are affecting in reducing inflammation and is associated symptom in the nasal passages. To summarize this shows what pollen allergies are, how they occur, what symptoms they cause, and what treatments to use prevent these symptoms from happening.
