Who was One Direction?

One Direction, 1D for short, is an English-Irish pop boy band, including Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. The biggest band on the planet was created in 2010 on The X factor by Simon Cowell and a guest judge Nicole Scherzinger. All of the boys auditioned as solo candidates for the seventh series of the British television singing competition, The X factor. They all failed to progress at the bootcamp stage of the competition and were put together to form a five-piece boy band. The group signed with Simon Cowell’s record label after finishing third on the television series. In March 2015, a member of the group, Zayn Malik left saying “he wanted to be a normal 22-year old who can relax and have a break from the spotlight”. In August 2015, One direction announced they were going on a hiatus to pursue solo projects.

One Direction has released five hit albums which are, Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013), Four (2014), and Made in the A.M. (2015) and they have a total of 91 songs. Their third album, Midnight Memories, was the best-selling album worldwide of 2013. The band has won 242 awards and has been nominated for 366 awards, some including six Billboard Music Awards, seven Brit Awards, seven American Music Awards, and 28 Teen Choice Awards. As of 2020, One Direction have sold a total of 70 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. 1D have also broken six Guinness World records. In 2013, the group was named the Global Recording Artist of the Year by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. In 2014, Billboard named the band “Artist of the Year”. One Direction have been on four world tours, and their biggest concert was at the FNB Stadium, the largest stadium on the African continent with 94,700 seats. 1D performed at the massive soccer stadium for two days and received more than $6.2 million from 131,615 sold tickets.

The Break

One Direction announced that they were going on hiatus in August 2015, five months after Zayn Malik left the boy band in March of the same year. Louis Tomlinson later confirmed that the break would be around 18 months. January 2016 was the date that the band was officially split up and by May 2017, all members of the group released solo singles. At the 2017 Brit Awards, One Direction won the Video of the Year award for their song “History”. Out of all the members of the band, Liam Payne accepted the award by himself. Turns out it wasn’t just 18 months, it was around 5 years instead, and they already celebrated the 10 year anniversary of One Direction over social media. One Direction fans call themselves “Directioners”, and they haven’t given up on the band and are still hoping they get back together and reunite as One Direction in the near future.

Getting Back Together

As all the members of 1D have gone solo in the past few years, in their interviews they get asked the same question, “Do you think One Direction will get back together, or reunite?” and their answers are all the same “Yes” but they have not yet given a date for it. Fans have spotted members from the band supporting them at each other’s concerts. In 2020, Liam Payne and Niall Horan were doing live streams on their instagram accounts, and one time Liam was noticed on Niall’s live and got to catch up with him. This also happened on Liam’s live and he spotted Louis on there too. Recent studies and agents have seen clues that 1D will finally end up together by the end of 2021 and chances are stronger than ever, but what do you believe will happen?
