Table tennis, also known as ping-pong and whiff-whaff, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball, also known as the ping-pong ball, back and forth across a table using small rackets. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net. It was invented in the 1880s in England, and it debuted in the Olympics in 1988. An intense game of table tennis stimulates mental alertness and concentration and develops mental acuity, improving reflexes, and improving hand-eye coordination. It is a sport that can be played by anyone, no matter what age.

Mouma Das is an Indian Tennis Player. She was born February 24, 1984, in Narkeldanga, West Bengal, and was brought up in Kolkata. She started playing table tennis on a full-fledged basis from the year 1993. In an interview, Mouma Das says that “When I was little I was naughty… And across from my house, there was a table tennis club…So my parents enrolled me there…I was feeling down and didn’t want to be here…My uncle, who also played table tennis was there and he and my coach showed me all the equipment. You know the bat, the ball, and I started to feel good and was a little bit interested. So I started playing and I started practicing.” She then went on to win many tournaments and awards for India.

Mouma Das was part of the Indian duo, who won India’s first-ever silver in the women’s doubles event at the Commonwealth Games 2018. Das has won multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games including a gold in the Women’s Team Competition in 2018. She has received the Arjuna Award in 2013 for her contribution to the sport. The Arjuna Award, officially known as Arjuna Awards for Outstanding Performance in Sports and Games is the sports honor of the Republic of India. In an interview, Mouma Das says this about winning the Commonwealth Games, “Yeah, it’s a dream… when I got gold, it was truly a shock… And I was struggling against my opponents…my team was very motivated. There was also lots of hard work. We played our strengths and worked on our weaknesses.” She also went to the Olympics, she says that the Olympics were an amazing experience, and how she enjoyed seeing other countries train for different sports as well as table tennis.

As a woman playing table tennis, Mouma Das says that she has not felt an inequality. But, she also states that this could be because she was trained in her home, with her family. She talks about how her family was supportive. She also talks about working hard, “During my training time, I would go on a run and ground exercise in the morning, and from 8 to 12 I would practice table tennis, then for 2-3 hours, I would rest and have lunch. And then at 3, I would start training again. So I would train a lot, and dedicate a lot of time.” Mouma talks about how table tennis is good for the health saying, “Sports are very good for health and mentally there is satisfaction when playing sports… I will say that table tennis is a very good game physically, mentally, everything gets a workout. I will personally say that table tennis is a good sport because there are different categories, and you’ll be able to play with a wide range of people. And there are a lot of events, meaning there is a lot of strategies when playing. And at the same time, it is a lot of fun.”

Table tennis is a popular sport. In fact, it is the most popular indoor sport. There are many players like Mouma Das, that take this once hobby and make it into an amazing career. Not only is it a fun sport, but it also has many physical and mental health benefits. Such as mental alertness and concentration. There is also not much inequality in the sport compared to other popular sports around the world.
