Why is it so important you ask? Because in movies, mental illnesses are stereotypical. In movies they think that OCD means you just want everything to be clean. Depression means that you’re sad all the time. ADHD means that you’re hyper all the time. But television is wrong. In this, I’ll be telling you about the movies that portrayed them badly, and the movies that portrayed them spot on.

There are some good movies that have depicted mental health very well, like for example, the movie Perks of Being a Wallflower, Silver Linings Playbook, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and many more.

But then there are the other movies that are stereotypical for example, The Visit, Split, Benny and Joon and more. Most movies thatget all of this wrong, are usually horror movies. I think that most movies that get it all wrong are horror movies because they are simply used for entertainment. Well, technically every movie is used for entertainment, but movies that actually want to create awareness about that topic, but they present it in a way that it is entertaining and not extremely serious, not so serious that it’s boring, but serious where it is entertaining and you get the message.

A movie that I personally like, and is a good depiction of mental health is Perks of Being a Wallflower. It is about a boy named Charlie whose friend took his life over the summer, and he is transitioning from middle school to high school. On the way he meets a group of seniors who he becomes friends with. Over the course of the year he experiences challenges with his friends, school, and his state of mind. It is a very good movie that delivers their message very well while also having a good entertaining story line. If you want to watch it you can find it on Netflix.

In the end, movies are meant for entertainment, but people shouldn’t mock people’s mental health and behavior. Especially horror movies, they are meant for entertainment, but sometimes these types of scenarios are real. And people who do that type of stuff need the proper care to help their state of mind, and making a movie that is entertaining people about things that have happened in real life. Many people have lost their family or friends to things like that and mocking it is not good. So don’t give in to it. And save yourself from all the nightmares you might get from the movies and watch some movies that actually deliver a message.
