How Biden Plans to Control the Coronavirus

“‘The pandemic is getting significantly more worrisome all across the country,’ Biden said on Friday. ‘I want everyone to know on day one, we’re going to put our plan to control this virus into action.’”

The first thing on Biden’s promises list to keep control of Covid-19 is more testing and contact tracing. Without testing, scientists are not able to get a clear picture of where the virus is coming from. About 40% of the coronavirus cases are asymptomatic. A test result will help stop the spread of disease. It has been found that an estimated amount of 75% of infected people need to be quarantined to stop the spread of the virus. Biden and his team say they will invest in new technology to create a U.S. Public Health Jobs Corps for contact tracing. They will also double drive-through testing sites, and make testing “regular, reliable, and free.”

Secondly, he wants to invest more in vaccines and treatment. The Trump administration has spent billions of dollars, since March, to develop Covid-19 vaccines. Although the states have already arranged their plan on how to distribute vaccines, they haven’t received funds from the Congress to begin building the facilities to distribute the vaccines. Biden promises to put $25 billion into making and distributing vaccines for free to everyone in the US.

Biden also states that he will work with mayors and local governors to make masks mandatory when in public. From a modeling study in October, it is shown that more than 100,000 lives could be saved from Covid-19 if 95% of Americans wore masks. As for health care workers, Biden’s team says that they will provide personal protective equipment for them. There has been a critical shortage of personal protective equipment since early 2020, and has worsened. Medical and nursing home employees have often had to reuse gloves, masks and other protective equipment at their own risks. Estimated by the union, National Nurses United, more than 1,700 health care workers have died of Covid-19. Biden claims that he will make sure the national supply stocks are fully stock, and create American-sourced products so the US wouldn’t need to rely on other countries.

Biden wants to make a “clear, consistent, and evidence based guidance” and lastly, search for future threats. Although it may be hard to find the data, the Biden team wants to create a Nationwide Pandemic Dashboard so that people can measure how much disease is in their ZIP code for themselves. They also want to encourage the CDC providing guidance to communities about when they should and need to shut down. The Biden administration also says it plans to increase the ranks of the CDC overseas, so that future threats can be spotted by its disease detectives. Biden also claims that he wants to relaunch PREDICT, the pathogen-tracking program that looks for future disease threats such as the coronavirus.

Biden will be taking office the 20th of January 2021. Between now and then, we should continue social distancing and wearing masks. Stay safe!
