Who is Kamala Harris?

Sydney Shimada, Journalist

The U.S. has many influential and inspiring women to look up to. One who stands out among all is Kamala Harris. As the second African American and first South Asian American woman to be in the Senate, and now the first woman vice president, Kamala Harris has accomplished the remarkable.

Kamala Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland CA. Her mom, Shyamala Gopalan, was a biologist who worked on studying and isolating breast cancer. Her father, Donald Harris, taught at Stanford University. Kamla has a younger sister named Maya Harris. At seven years old her parents were divorced and at age twelve she moved with her mom and Maya to Canada, Montreal, and Quebec. While in Quebec, she learned to speak a little french. To start off her political career she even organized her first protest against a building owner. Kamala attended a high school in Quebec, when she returned to the states she entered Howard University. There she was elected into the liberal arts student council and joined the debate team. Later she enrolled at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Kamala Harris started her career as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County. She became managing attorney of the Career Criminal Unit in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office in 1998, and in 2000 she was appointed chief of its Community and Neighborhood Division. She also established the state’s first Bureau of Children’s Justice. In 2003 she defeated her boss and became San Francisco district attorney. While in this position she launched the “Back on Track” initiative that cut recidivism by offering job training and other educational programs for low-level offenders. She continued to move up and in 2010 she became California’s attorney general. She accomplished many things during this role, some of which including officiating the first same-sex marriage in California since Prop 8 was initially enacted, filing a successful lawsuit against the false advertising of the for-profit Corinthian Colleges chain, and continued legal pursuit of the classified advertising service Backpage. Later, she moved on to the senate. In November 2016 she earned a seat in the U.S. Senate from California. She had become the second African American and first South Asian American woman to be in the Senate. Last year on January 21, 2019, she announced that she was going to run for president, however, in early December she said that she was ending her presidential campaign. Though determined to shoot back up again, on August 11, 2020, Joe Biden announced that he chose Kamala Harris to be his running mate and vice president. On November 7, 2020, Joe Biden was elected president making Kamala the first-ever woman vice president.

Kamala Harris continues to inspire and amaze us all through all her accomplishments. She has achieved so much and continues to surprise us with her ability to rise up and improve all around her.
