The 2020 Summer Olympics/Paralympics have been cancelled due to the global pandemic. 2020 qualifiers will keep their places for the 2021 Olympic games, along with new qualifiers. This also gives a chance for competitors that were too young to compete in the 2020 games to compete. Out of the 125 athletes who took part in a town hall with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, about three-quarters approve of the postponement of this summer’s Tokyo Games. Many athletes are not able to train right now because all the gyms are closed.

Seiko Hashimoto, Japan’s Olympic minister says that the Tokyo Olympics will continue in 2021 regardless of the state of the global pandemic. “‘It will take place with or without COVID. The Tokyo Games will start on July 23 next year,’ Coates said.” The CEO of the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, Toshiro Muto said that the games would still take place even if a vaccine was not found. “A vaccine is not a requirement,” he had said. “Of course, if vaccines are developed we’ll really appreciate it.” How to protect athletes and other attendees from the Coronavirus are in the process of being reviewed by Organizers and Japanese government officials. They are having meetings and discussing efforts against the Coronavirus. The meeting covers many issues that needed to be sorted out, such as the rules for spectators and of the behavior in the Olympic Village, and how to handle an outbreak among athletes.

Evidence has been found that the Japanese public has been uneasy about holding the games. Many are uncertain about the state of the pandemic about 10 months from now. “A survey from Kyodo News found that fewer than 1 in 4 people in Japan want the Tokyo Olympics to go forward as scheduled. More than a third of the people polled said they should be postponed, and another third said they wanted to see the games canceled.”
