Portland Shooting

Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic, life in the United States and all around the world has been extremely difficult. Everyone is forced to tremendously reduce outdoor time, which can eventually get extremely boring, and many services are unavailable. Along with the pandemic, police brutality and violent protests are causing severe issues. A violent protest is what you will be reading about today.

Over 16,000 people are murdered in the US every year. This is absolutely insane, and it has become more obvious during these difficult times. Throughout June, July, and August, nightly, tense protests were raging around Portland, Oregon. On Saturday, August 29th, a confrontation between BLM protestors and Trump supporters led to a man being shot and killed. This man was Aaron J. Danielson. Danielson was a 39-year old man who died of a wound in his chest. The police reported hearing gunshots from the area of Southwest 3rd Avenue and Southwest Alder Street. A 48-year old man named Michael Forest Reinoehl claims that he is the shooter. Reinoehl was shot and killed in a confrontation with law enforcement, as they were trying to take him in.

A friend of the victim, Chandler Pappas, said that “They executed my partner. Hunted him down.” He also said, “I think the two of us alone away from all the rest of the Trump rally with all the trucks and all the other noise going on, I think they isolated us and they thought they could get away with it. I think they were looking for somebody just like us who were down there unprotected who didn’t go and bring guns because we didn’t have the intention of killing people.” According to Pappas, he and his partner were targeted. There has been no evidence that this is true, but the homicide was still devastating. One can only imagine how painful it was for Pappas, as well as Danielson’s family and other friends.

This incident shows just how horrible these Covid-19 times are. To everyone reading this: Please be careful, remember to wear your masks, and stay well away from violence.
