Animal Abuse in Pet Stores

Sunniva Knox, Journalist

Have you ever seen a sick animal in a pet store? Let’s talk about it. Pet stores are not good places to get animals. Puppies that are at Pet stores usually come from puppy mills. says “Puppy mills are inhumane commercial dog breeding facilities that may sell puppies in pet stores.” 1.2 million puppies are euthanized yearly at these unsafe and unfair puppy mills. The animals that are bred are illegally sold to pet stores. These puppy mills are not safe and this can lead to many health problems. Puppy mills are very wrong and they are not ok. We need to stop this madness now. They should be illegal.

Puppies are not the only animals that are affected. When I was younger I would commonly go to the  Petco nearby and I would go look at the animals. There are at least 11 dwarf hamsters in one glass cage that is way too small for one, there would be no water or food in the cages at times, and they sell cages that are really substandard for the hamsters. There have been reports at other pet stores that they have seen cats wandering the rodent facilities.

The from their 3 shady things that you didn’t know about pet stores stated that “Dogs are usually crammed into filthy, overcrowded, stacked wire cages and are denied healthy food, clean water, and basic veterinary care” This is animal abuse. Animal abuse is a very serious thing. I can speak from experience of buying/adopting hamsters from these stores/shelters. I deeply regret buying/adopting from them. I have had multiple hamsters that the pet store employees say will live for 2 years and have lived for a month. It’s sad to say but I have seen tons of betta fish who have passed away and the employees don’t even realize. Petco keeps their beta fish in tiny plastic containers on a shelf. This can cause very bad health problems.
