Should TikTok be Banned?

Should Tik Tok be Banned?

President Donald Trump has stated he will ban TikTok on September 15, 2020. This is not the first time the president has said he will be banning TikTok, but it could be the last. It is now September 18, and as of right now, TikTok is still here.

What’s so bad about that?

I, as a 12-year old girl, gets pretty scared when Trump says that he will be banning the app. I know, that sounds cheesy, but honestly, I don’t care.  TikTok is an app where many other people and I can pass time and entertain themselves.

What do you do?

You can scroll through the “For You Page” or “Following Page”, or make your own videos. You are able to make an account and customize your privacy settings. The same goes for a video that you want to post. Your video can be 15 to 60 seconds long (I’ve heard you can now shoot a three minute video but I don’t know how to). You can add music and dance to it, or you can just have silence and they can hear you talk or sing. People use TikTok to film dances, comedy, POV’s (Point of view), and more.

Why does Donald Trump want to ban TikTok?

It has been confirmed that TikTok is a Chinese owned app. Nothing’s wrong with that… right? WRONG. The Chinese government has been using TikTok as a spy app. They use TikTok to steal your name, location, and other personal information. Now I know you’re probably thinking, “Well in that case he should ban TikTok!” I totally understand why you would think that, but I’m not quite done. Microsoft is trying to buy TikTok. Now I’m unsure on why they haven’t bought it yet, or if they have, but I hope that they buy/bought it!

Why I think TikTok shouldn’t be banned.

I think that TikTok should not be banned because it is such an amazing app. Not only is it entertaining, it changed many people’s lives. There have been many creators that blew up (went viral and became a popular creator), and started to make money off of their videos. A lot of popular creators say that the money from their videos is how they are surviving. Think about it, imagine you and your family are struggling with the bills. All of a sudden your child comes running into the kitchen and exclaims, “MOM, DAD! LOOK ONE OF MY TIKTOKS BLEW UP AND GOT 21 MILLION LIKES. AND I HAVE 14 MILLION FOLLOWERS NOW!” You would be so happy! Over time, your child would start making money from his/her videos. Soon enough, you don’t need to work anymore because of the amount of money they are making. It’s been a few months now, and you and your family are finally happy, not stressed, and comfortable. Then you turn on the news. You hear that Trump might ban TikTok. You all start to panic and the next week the app is ripped away from you. Now you have to find a job again, and everything goes back to how it was. However, this time it starts getting worse.

Now all because of a small action, someone’s life has once again changed. This will happen to thousands of people, and I can’t help but worry. That’s all I have for today, but please keep that in mind, before you go and hate on someone’s reaction video to TikTok’s possible ban; if it comes across your mind to hate.     -Kylee Ngo

The information I have used in this article is from videos I came across on TikTok. I’m sorry but I don’t know what the specific videos were, how many I saw, nor how much/what information I took from the video; so I have no way to attach it here.
