Counter Strike: Global Offensive

The Counter Strike series has contained some of the most well known and popular games in the past two decades. The most recent of these games is Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Also known as CS:GO, this game has taken the world by storm, and became one of the most, if not the most popular shooter game out there. So what exactly is CS:GO?

CS:GO is a first-person shooter game released by Valve. The game first started being developed in March 2010 and was released on August 21, 2012. The game is the newest addition to the Counter Strike series, which originally started as a mod for Half Life. Like many other CS games, CS:GO is a tactical, team-based shooter. The game is also objective-based.

In the main game modes, casual (which is for players looking to have fun) and competitive (which is for players looking to have a more competitive experience), the two main teams are the Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists, or Ts and CTs. In these game modes, the CTs either defend the bombsite/defuse the bomb, or rescue the hostages. The Ts usually plant and defend the bomb or defend the hostages. The game mode depends on which of the many CS:GO maps you are playing on.

The game is quite balanced, giving both sides distinctive advantages and disadvantages. The main advantages are that CTs get to defend the 2 bomb sites (which is easier than attacking), and Ts can all attack one single site together and overwhelm the CTs. The game also offers different weapon, grenade, and gear choices for the two teams. While both teams share the majority of weapons, like the AWP sniper, both teams also have different weapons with their own advantages. The Terrorists usually have cheaper weapons that do more damage, like the AK-47, while the Counter-Terrorists have more accurate weapons with less recoil, like the M4A1-S.

Now let’s talk about the mechanics. CS:GO has mechanics that are very different from other games, and make the game much more difficult, especially for new players. The biggest of these mechanics would likely be the recoil guns give off. While firing a weapon, especially an automatic one, your bullets will tend to go away where your crosshair is (usually going up and then left or right), leading to inaccuracy and difficulty killing enemies. These means that players must either learn to control a weapon’s recoil, or to tap fire weapons, meaning firing more slowly instead of spraying the weapon.

Another large mechanic is movement inaccuracy. Weapons in CS:GO tend to be much more inaccurate while you are moving, meaning you must stand still to hit your shots. This mechanic is primarily designed to prevent people from running at the enemy or dodging their bullets while still being able to hit that enemy accurately. Due to this, players either have to stand still or move and then stop moving to kill an enemy.

CS:GO also has one of the largest player bases of any game, averaging 500,000 players online at any given time. This has led to the game having a large E-sports community, due to the competitive nature and popularity of CS:GO. This demonstrates how good of a game CS:GO is, being able to maintain such a high player count for such an old game.

Overall, CS:GO is one of the best shooter games out there. It has balanced mechanics, while still maintaining an overall fun experience for the player. And one of the best parts is that it’s free! So if you are ever bored with the video game you are playing right now, or simply looking to start gaming, you should check it out.
