Preparing for Eighth Grade

Kyle Jiang

Eighth grade is a great year for learning, though it is a tougher year compared to previous years in middle school. Work and study habits play a big role in making eighth grade a successful year, so here are some tips on how to improve your work and study habits.

Work habits

  • Never procrastinate doing your work and try to finish as soon as you can
    • The later you wait to do work or study, the more stressed you’ll be about it being unfinished
  • Take useful notes in class, and keep any worksheets needed for tests or projects
    • Never throw anything away
  • When working on an assignment, create an environment free of distraction
    • Don’t use your phone or have any other devices or screens near you (TV, computer, tablet, etc.)
  • Take small breaks every 30-50 minutes
    • When working, the brain tends to only remember the beginning and end of your work time, so working with breaks help you retain more information
  • Always ask questions when you’re struggling in class so you don’t end up having gaps in your knowledge
    • Asking questions is better than trying to find out yourself, your teachers are professionals at their jobs, so they are the most likely to know the answer
  • Make sure to be on top of all assignments
    • When you have long term assignments, get as much done as possible, it will reduce the stress when the deadline comes closer

Study habits-for tests

  • Go through previous worksheets and notes to cover topics you need help with
    • Anything you did in class should help you with the test
  • Find out when your test is at least a couple days beforehand so you have time to prepare
  • Study in bursts of 30-50 minutes and take breaks in between
    • When working, the brain tends to only remember the beginning and end of your work time, so working with breaks help you retain more information
  • Ask a lot of questions about the test in class because your teacher can be very helpful
  • Always over prepare rather than under prepare so you’re ready for anything unexpected

Study and work habits are extremely important in order to be successful in eighth grade, but hard work is just as important. Make sure you have a goal in mind, as it gives you motivation to be an amazing hardworking student with effective work habits.
