Embrace Your Inner Artist

Kendall Lee, Journalist

What is an artist? Artists are usually categorized as professional painters, sculptors, or drawers. But the only real classification to becoming an artist is having some sort of skill and creativity. You can’t get anywhere if you don’t believe in yourself. This might just sound like a sappy, overused saying, but it is true. The type of art I’ll be focusing on is drawing. Below is my opinion on how to become a better artist.

  1. Before you instantly become a master, you need to start with letting your ideas out. Doodling and sketching is a great way to start your flow of creativity.
  2. After you have your artist mindset turned on, you need the materials. Nothing overly expensive, just something simple like a pencil, paper, and eraser. You can go a long way with just these materials.
  3. Observe the structure of things. Look at the world around you. A true artist is always curious and observant. The world is a fascinating place where you can draw inspiration from.
  4. Look at other people’s art. This is a good way to see how other people see the world. It gives you different perspectives on what art is. This might give you some inspiration for your own art.
  5. Practice different forms of drawing. Draw things with perspective, or draw different shapes or forms. Try different mediums! Maybe instead of drawing abstract, practice realism. Stick to the art form you feel the most comfortable drawing in and develop that form into your own style.
  6. Look at an object, place, or person, and draw it in your own style. Maybe you can make it more cartoony, or maybe you could make it just as realistic. Your style is all up to you. Make sure not to copy other people’s art, it makes yours not as unique. Also, choose a style that you think best expresses the message of your artwork.
  7. But none of these steps count if you don’t have the mindset to start. You have to know that you can’t start out as Leonardo de Vinci or Picasso, art is as complicated as you make it. If you want to get better, you have to keep practicing. Enjoy the process of making art. Art is not something that can be “perfect.”

Art is a way for people to express themselves. Art doesn’t have to be drawing, painting, or sculpting. Art can be writing. Art can be cooking. Art can be animation. Art can be anything you want it to be. Art takes the form of whatever you want it to form. Art comes in all different forms, shapes, sizes, and materials. So get out there, and embrace your inner artist!
