When you go on Google, you may notice that the logo changes to a fun design from time to time. Sometimes it’s a game. Sometimes it’s a video. Either ways, now you’re thinking, what is a Google Doodle?

Well, a Google Doodle is a creative illustration decorating the google logo, while celebrating someone or something simultaneously. A team of workers create a new theme for the logo everytime a special event occurs. Occasionally, they hold contests for students to create designs for Google to use. There is a prize for the winner, sometimes being a scholarship. This year’s contest winner happens to be first grader Sarah Gomez.

So, how did the idea of decorating the Google logo start? This tradition of creating Google Doodles started off even before Google was officially incorporated as a company, on August 30, 1998. Sergey Brin and Larry Page were planning to go to the Burning Man festival, and in order to announce their absence, they decided to insert the Burning Man logo behind Google’s second “o”. Although it was a simple design, made only to send the message that Sergey and Larry were “out of office”, the idea became popular among Google users. Ever since, the tradition of decorating the Google logo has remained a fun way to remember special events.

One of the most popular forms of decorating the Google logo is by making it into a game. Some of the most enjoyed games are the Halloween Game (2018), the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Game (2013), the Mother’s Day Game (2013), the Pony Express 155th Anniversary Game (2015), and the Hip Hop 44th Anniversary Game (2017). If you are interested in more fun games, you can always go to the Google Doodle website, and search up more fun games and animations.

If you are ever interested in making a Google Doodle, you can participate in the Google 4 Doodle contest. Basic rules are applied, such as no plagiarising, but the main point is to have fun decorating the Google logo. Go on and try it out!
