HTC Vive vs. Oculus Rift

Virtual Reality. A new technology that allows you to immerse yourself inside of your favorite games using a headset and controllers. There are two major VR companies leading the market, HTC and Oculus. Both claim to be the better brand. It’s time to see which is better.

 

HTC Vive:

The Basics

  • $499
  • Intended mainly for PC gamers
  • Tethered (Wires run to and from the headset)
  • Can be connected through USB 3.0 and HDMI
  • Has a 1,080 by 1,200 pixel screen for each eye
  • Uses a camera, motion tracker, and external motion tracking for headset tracking
  • Needs HTC Vive controllers
  • Uses SteamVR as a main platform

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Great VR experience
  • Uses motion tracked controllers
  • Can use external sensors for whole room VR

Cons

  • More expensive than Oculus Rift
  • Tethered headset can make whole room VR awkward

  • Uses motion tracking and external visual positioning to track headset
  • Can use the Oculus controllers or XBox One controller
  • Uses Oculus or SteamVR for main platforms

Cons

  • Requires 4 wires to work at its full capacity

The Oculus Rift is a powerful PC-tethered VR system that is even more appealing thanks to the lower price
