The first game in the world cup will take place in Russia on June 14th. Russia will be playing Saudi Arabia at 8:00 am local time. This is the first time the world cup will be held in Russia. In the last world cup in Rio, Germany won against Argentina 1-0   to win the trophy. The trophy is made of made of 18 carat gold with amalekite base, it stands 36.8 centimetres high and weighs 6.1 kilograms.

 

Background history:

The first world cup was in July 13, 1930, with Argentina and Uruguay playing, ending off with Uruguay winning 4-2. The world cup was originally amateur players only, mainly just for show not competition. FIFA wanted to make it bigger and turn it into a international soccer tournament.

In 1930 the first competitive world cup tournament started with 200 teams around the world that entered.  As soccer started to get bigger they were considered a olympic sport in the 1900.
